Reviews

In 2008, Gentofte Library donated a very large collection of theatre press-clippings from 1950 to 2000, arranged alphabetically by title. The collection is divided into two main categories: drama and ballet performances, and opera and musicals.

The clippings may be ordered for consultation in Reading Room West through REX by typing ‘Udklipssamling’ in the search box.

For reviews published after 2000 please use the database Infomedia, which is available via The Royal Library's e-resources / REX.

Personal Archives

The Drama Collection regularly receives personal archives from Danish performers that include working papers, correspondences, scrapbooks and other private materials. Renowned actors such as Bodil Kjer, Preben Harris, Stig Lommer, Henning Moritzen, Asta Nielsen, and Poul Reumert, have all donated their archives to The Royal Library. In ‘Guide to The Drama Collection’ you will find a complete list.

The Manuscript Collection also holds personal archives, mainly from older performers such as Kjeld Abell, Hans Christian Andersen, Herman Bang, Bjørn Bjørnson, William Bloch, August Bournonville, Edvard Brandes, Johannes Ewald, Johan Ludvig Heiberg, Johanne Luise Heiberg, Poul Henningsen, Henrik Hertz, Ludvig Holberg, Henrik Ibsen, Harald Lander, Kaj Munk, Adam Oehlenschläger, and Poul Reumert.

Posters and Programmes

All printed theatre programmes and theatre posters are transferred via legal deposit to The Royal Library; the theatres themselves also hand in other publications. The programmes go to The Ephemera Collection, and regularly articles from The Royal Theatre’s programmes are posted online (choose "Teaterprogrammer"). Posters are deposited in The Collection of Prints and Photographs, but the posters from the theatre in Lille Grønnegade from 1723-26 may be consulted online.

Incidental Music

Opera and incidental music for theatre performances are part of to The Music Collection, much of which is digitized as for instance the digitized collection of Danish Theatre music around 1750-1900, the digitized collection of printed music from the 1800s to August Bournonville ballets, and the digitized collection of sheet music and lyrics for the oldest Copenhagen Summer Revues 1876-1900.

Theatre Photos

Theatre photos are available both in The Drama Collection and The Collection of Prints and Photographs. Here you may find two large collections of theatrical images, partly The Holger Damgaard Collection with scene photos from Copenhagen theatres from the period 1909–1940, and partly John R. Johnsen's vast collection primarily of ballet, modern dance, and performance from the period 1969–2003 - but also jazz. There is also a large collection of portraits of performers, sorted by name. More photos will be digitized and registered in REX.
