Royal Danish Library has negotiated an agreement with one of the world's largest providers of scientific journals, Wiley, which gives Danish researchers and universities access to publication in the publisher's journals - at no extra charge.

A large part of the total global research today is locked behind payment walls, where the scientific publishers demand money both to publish research articles and to provide access to read them. The new agreement means in concrete terms that Danish researchers can be published free of charge in Wiley's publications. In addition, there will be immediate and free access to Danish research publications.

“With this agreement, we have wanted to distance ourselves from embargo periods and hybrid publishing. Danish research must be open and accessible to the whole world when the research article is published, and we will not pay for both access and publication. We have succeeded in reaching that goal, and it is good!”, says Kira Stine Hansen, Deputy Director, Royal Danish Library.

The agreement with Wiley runs for the next four years, and it is estimated that the agreement as a whole will lead to a considerable saving on Danish expenses for Wiley. The terms of the agreement are similar to those the library managed to reach in an agreement with Elsevier in 2021, another major provider of research publications.
