Prelude to Drama in The Black Diamond II: The Father

ANNUAL PASS ONLY – Come and hear about the dramaturgical work of interpreting August Strindberg's classic "The Father".

You can meet them at the prelude

Lise Bach Hansen (Head of Literature & Talks) leads the conversation between
Anna Laewetz (Senior Researcher)
Karen-Maria Bille (playwright and board member of Danish Dramatists)
Christoffer Berdal (stage director)
Thomas Lagermand Lundme (playwright)

August Strindberg's "The Father" is a masterpiece of world drama – an intense psychological drama about power, gender, knowledge and identity. Ahead of Drama in The Black Diamond II: The Father, Royal Danish Library invites you to a conversation which puts the classic into play and connects it to our time.

The conversation will take as its starting point "The Father" as a classic and Strindberg as one of the most significant playwrights of the Nordic and modern drama. What is it about the play that still challenges and speaks to us today? And how can the dramatic masterpieces of the past be resurrected in new interpretations?

The Father in the Present

The discussion will be based on playwright Tomas Lagermand Lundme's newly written version of "The Father". It is written with a contemporary setting in mind, and will later be performed in reading form in the Queen's Hall. We will hear how Lundme has worked with the Strindberg inspiration, what choices he has made in the encounter with Strindberg's original, and how the play's fundamental conflicts can be reflected in today's understandings of gender, power and family.

The conversation also provides insight into the concept of Drama in The Black Diamond, where classic drama is updated through readings, and new texts are created from the classics. The drama is taken from Royal Danish Library's unique collection of more than 18,000 plays - a living archive of the history of drama. The prelude is for everyone with an interest in drama, literature and classics that remain relevant.
