Trio con Brio Copenhagen: New Voices (3:3)

Hear the trio’s interpretation of Ravel’s magical Piano Trio from 1914, a brand-new trio by Søren Nils Eichberg, and Schumann’s legendary Piano Quintet with two distinguished guest musicians.

This is the last chance to experience Trio con Brio Copenhagen's concert series New Voices in the Queen's Hall.

New Voices is a three-year series of concerts in the Boulez-Saal Berlin, The Black Diamond in Copenhagen and the concert society Aarhus Musikforening. Each concert features a world premiere of a new work commissioned by Trio con Brio Copenhagen in collaboration with The Black Diamond. In the series, three of today's most significant composers explore what a piano trio can sound like today.

All concerts conclude with one of the great piano quintets of the repertoire, with the trio joined by violin and viola. This evening, the trio is supplemented by the leader of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Ludvig Gudim on violin, and the internationally renowned Hélène Clément on viola.

For this final concert, Søren Nils Eichberg has composed the new trio work. Along with the new work, Trio con Brio will also play Maurice Ravel's Piano Trio in A minor and Robert Schumann's Piano Quintet, Op. 44.

Trio con Brio Copenhagen
"Con brio" is Italian for "with energy", and the trio, based in Copenhagen, has toured the world with their fresh, contemporary approach to the classical repertoire. The trio grew out of the meeting between two musical duos; the two Korean-born sisters, violinist Soo-Jin Hong and cellist Soo-Kyung Hong, and Soo-Kyung's husband, pianist Jens Elvekjær.

Ludvig Gudim (NO)
Violinist Ludvig Gudim is the leader of the DR Symphony Orchestra after winning the audition last year. He has previously performed as a soloist with a wide range of Norwegian and international orchestras and released his debut album with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and Howard Griffiths in 2022. He graduated from The Juilliard School in New York in 2021 and won Juilliard's violin competition in 2019.

Hélène Clément (FR)
The internationally renowned violist Hélène Clément has performed at several of the world's greatest concert venues, including the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Wigmore Hall in London. Danish audiences may know her from the Doric Quartet, where she was a member from 2013 to 2024. She plays a viola from 1843, built by the Italian Francesco Giussani. The instrument previously belonged to Frank Bridge and later to Benjamin Britten. The viola is on generous loan from Britten Pears Arts.

Søren Nils Eichberg (DK)
"From punk rock to opera: Søren Nils Eichberg is one of Europe's most exciting composers." – Royal Opera House. After his chamber opera GLARE premiered in London, The Times awarded the opera five stars, writing: "I can recall no more captivating 75-minute piece of musical theatre". Eichberg's next major opera, Schönerland, about exile and return, was again praised by both the audience and the press.

The three composers in New Voices are supported by the Augustinus Foundation.
