Letter-writing Concert 2025

The last pillar boxes in Denmark are disappearing – but the last letter hasn't been written! Turn off your phone and indulge in the quiet, confidential space of letter-writing.

Once upon a time, it was the most common form of communication. The mail carrier arrived several times a day. During this year, the last pillar boxes will be taken down. And declarations of love and travel stories are often sent quickly on digital media, sprinkled with emojis.

Space for reflection

At Royal Danish Library, we have two million letters from a time when we communicated more slowly and perhaps more thoughtfully. Today, it is difficult and expensive to send a letter. And the time it takes is hard to find.

Overall, there are not many spaces left in our everyday lives that invite focus and absorption; a place where you can gather your thoughts and get them down on paper.
That's why Royal Danish Library is hosting a letter-writing concert, where we provide a warm, calm atmosphere under the glow of the green lamps in our beautiful, historic Old Reading Room.
Guitarist Jonas Egholm will create a beautiful soundscape as a frame for your writing, all the while allowing you to perpetuate the moment with pen in hand and share it with someone else in a letter.

Letters at Royal Danish Library

Royal Danish Library is home to millions of handwritten letters from great personalities, artists and writers. A selection of these letters will be brought to life in our Letter Performance The Journey, where travel letters are the theme. It can be experienced a few days before the Letter-writing noncert takes place.
Whether your own letter should be inspired by the travel letter genre, the musical impressions around you, or something completely different is up to you.
Royal Danish Library provides paper, envelope and pen. Once the letter is written and has a recipient's address, the library will send the letter for you.

Participants

Jonas Egholm

Guitarist Jonas Egholm is one of Denmark's greatest talents in classical music. Egholm has received great recognition both at home and abroad and has won several competitions and awards for his guitar playing. Egholm made his debut from the Royal Danish Academy of Music's Soloist Class in 2023. He has also studied at the prestigious "Máster en Interpretación de Guitarra" in Alicante with some of the world's leading guitarists (David Russell, Ricardo Gallén, Ignacio Rodés and many more). Already in 2022 he released his debut album, which was named "Album of the Week" on P2, just as Egholm himself was "P2 Talent of the Year 2023".

"Guitarist Jonas Egholm is not just one of the greatest talents in Denmark right now. He is made of the special stuff that creates stars. Soloist format, international awards. He masters everything from the earliest to the newest music. And he has an almost pandemic ability: He can be contagious!" - DR P2.
