The Faces of Music: Søren Schauser on London Underground
ONLY FOR THE DIAMOND CLUB: Come into the music engine room with the faces of music.
Associate Professor of Music History at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, PhD in Philosophy and author Søren Schauser talks about London's musical life in the first half of the 18th century, where a growth in musical life went hand in hand with a growing new, affluent middle class and music became an integral part of the fashion and identity of the time.
Two "foreigners" set the tone: the Italian violinist and composer Arcangelo Corelli and the German immigrant George Frideric Handel. Corelli's works shaped a musical style that would define the entire century - even though he never set foot in England. But beneath the great masters was an overlooked group of English composers who not only imitated, but developed their own musical language.
The programme at Concerto Copenhagen's concert on November 8, 2025 unveils London's almost forgotten "musical underground" and explores a rich but unknown repertoire. Come to this concert with a solid background knowledge after an hour in the company of Søren Schauser.
The Faces of Music
An incredible amount of work goes on before we, the audience, settle comfortably in the Queen's Hall's chairs to experience a piece of music. In no particular order – the musician must be trained, the music must be written and rehearsed, the instrument must be built, the programme printed and so on. The faces of music go behind the music, and set the stage for the Diamond Club to meet composers, musicians or researchers who will talk about the process before the music can sound for the audience's enjoyment.
