Press Photo of the Year 2025

Experience the exhibition Press Photo of the Year, which presents dramatic, political and memorable moments from 2025 - captured by some of the country's most talented press photographers.

The exhibition Press Photo of the Year presents the selected photographs from the competition of the same name, which each year honours Danish press photographers and their finest work across a range of categories, including 'News Photograph of the Year', 'Portrait of the Year', 'Sports Photograph of the Year', as well as the prestigious awards 'Press Photographer of the Year' and 'Press Photograph of the Year'.

Relive the year’s biggest stories

Once again, it has been a remarkable year for Danish press photography, with many powerful images competing for the title of Press Photo of the Year in 2025. The photographs nominated for the main award capture some of the defining stories of our time alongside deeply personal emotions: the largest demonstration in Greenland, young people in Ukraine, gang crime, children’s wellbeing, and the Danish summer. The main prize was awarded to Greenland for Sale by Oscar Scott Carl from Sermitsiaq.

GREENLAND FOR SALE This nominated image matters both now and in the future because it captures the greatest crisis we have experienced in many years — one that could reshape the entire world order. It was taken during the largest demonstration in Greenland’s history, and the Greenlanders in the photograph stand united as one people in opposition to Trump. There are only Greenlandic flags, and the crowd almost appears as an extension of the mountains in the background. Oscar Scott Carl, Sermitsiaq

THE MAN It could hardly be more Danish, say more about the Danish summer, or present a stronger image of freedom. The young men are on the threshold of adult life: they have finished secondary school and are stepping away from the fixed paths of childhood for the first time. It is a moment filled with happiness, hope, summer and freedom. We are in need of seeing that. They are the future and they are ready for it. Jacob Ehrbahn, Politiken.

ALL WE CHILDREN IN GANGSTER CITY “The photograph depicts a new reality that is chilling and unsettling in every way. The young man in the image displays an extreme self-absorption and disregard for all rules, sending chills down the spine. The cold room, containing nothing but empty tables, reinforces the story of a development that is becoming increasingly brutal, and which is now being exported to us. Mads Nissen, Politiken.

FAR FROM THE FRONTLINE: TEENAGERS PREPARE FOR WAR This image has been nominated because it is deeply moving and captures the reality many young Ukrainians live with. You immediately understand that the man is his father. In this way, the photograph encapsulates the entire situation and its consequences: a son following in his father’s footsteps. It is his future too, and history repeats itself. Nichlas Pollier, Freelance.

8-YEAR-OLD ALICE'S EVERYDAY LIFE IS LIKE A PUZZLE The image of little Alice sitting quietly on her bed, wearing earmuffs and clutching her teddy bear, tells a powerful story. She represents the challenges surrounding children’s wellbeing that society must become better at recognising and responding to. The question is how we help children out of isolation and make them feel safe. Dicte Marie Hostrup Sønnichsen, DMJX/Dagbladet Information.
