Wooden Elephant: Beyoncé's 'Lemonade'

The international string quintet returns to the Queen's Hall with a special edition of Beyoncé's legendary concept album.

Programme

Beyoncé (b. 1981): Lemonade (2016) arr. Ian Anderson.

The last time Wooden Elephant visited the Diamond, they filled the Queen's Hall twice with Björk's album Homogenic. Now the string quintet is back with another legendary album; Beyoncé's award-winning Lemonade from 2016, which you can hear in a very special interpretation for five strings and a narrator.

Lemonade has been named the best album of the 21st century by Rolling Stone Magazine. It is the sixth studio album by R'n'B singer-songwriter Beyoncé, and was released in 2016 as a concept album along with a 65-minute video side of the album. Lemonade documents Beyoncé's journey - from discovering her husband's infidelity, through anger, emptiness, responsibility, forgiveness - and finally redemption. It is the same journey through music and spoken word that Wooden Elephant takes in their own interpretation of the album.

Participants

Wooden Elephant:

Aoife Ní Bhriain (IE), violin
Hulda Jónsdóttir (IS), violin
Ian Anderson (GB), viola
Stefan Hadjiev (DE), cello
Nikolai Matthews (N), double bass
and more

About Wooden Elephant

The string quintet Wooden Elephant has made a name for themselves with their successful interpretations and arrangements of electronic-based albums for strings. In addition to Lemonade, their backlist includes Björk's Homogenic, Radiohead's Kid A and Aphex Twin's drukQs. With a visionary approach to the sonic possibilities of string instruments, they successfully combine popular music with classical instruments and traditions in completely new acoustic concert works.
