The Children's Library: Christmas stories & Christmas wishes
Get in the Christmas spirit and feel the whisper of history as you hear Christmas stories and make wish lists with a quill and wax seal.
Come to the Children's Library, where we will do activities in the creative workshop. This time we will write and draw our own wish lists. You can also participate in a cosy reading of Christmas stories, which will take place in the atmospheric, old reading room.
Practical information
There is free admission for all children and their adults to the Children's Library. The activities are primarily aimed at children aged 4-11, but all children are welcome.
The Children's Library takes place in the open library areas from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Sunday. Follow the signs through the building or ask the staff in the shop for directions.
The reading will take place at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in The Old Reading Room. There is a limited number of seats for the reading, and seats will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.
Food can be purchased at The Black Diamond's café. Food brought in can be enjoyed at selected locations in the library.
The library's archives contain fascinating books and catalogues where you can see what children in the old days wanted for Christmas. We have found pictures from department store catalogues full of toys that children could write on their wish lists. Inspired by the old wishes, you can consider what should be on your wish lists. Then grab your quill and make your own wish lists in the creative workshop.
The Christmas spirit spreads in The Old Reading Room as two Christmas stories come to life. Come and listen to both a beloved classic and a new tale – both filled with Christmas wishes, gifts and the magic that only exists in December.
In addition, you will always be able to delve into our collection of special children's books, dress up, play games or explore the library with, for example, our Diamond Hunt or explore the new magic exhibition. There are always children's hosts from the library present to guide you through the activities and children's offers. Read much more about it all below.
Creative workshop – make your own costume
We have been in the library's huge photo collection and found photos from the old days of people in fun and beautiful costumes. We are going to take a closer look at them and make our own costumes. During the winter holidays you can make your own mask. We have found marbled paper, luxury paper, glitter and colours so that you can give your mask its very own expression.
Imaginative costumes – dress up
In The Children's Library we have a brand new costume corner. Here you can dress up in fun and beautiful hats, and you can wrap yourself in beautiful capes with gold embroidery.
The little special library
In our small library you will find books that you have probably not seen before. These are old children's books from when your parents and grandparents were children, and new children's books with beautiful and different illustrations. You can also browse through a beautiful hand-bound edition of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales, which was made especially for The Children's Library by bookbinders from Royal Danish Library.
Fairytale filing cabinet
At The Children's Library, you can also explore our fairytale filing cabinets. Open the drawers and delve into some of the quirky and fascinating books, pictures, letters and much more that are stored in the library's collections. They all tell a funny, exciting, strange or perhaps surprising story about what lies on the shelves of the large magazines.
Experiences in the Galley Hall and on your own
There are many activities at The Children's Library, and you can choose what you want. You can participate in the creative workshop of the day, colour beautiful drawing sheets, immerse yourself in children's books, or play the library's own version of Ludo, Twister or memory. There are always children's hosts from the library present who can guide you through the activities. The children's hosts can also tell you about the library's other children's offers, which you can try inside and outside of The Black Diamond.
