Gold from the Archives: Inger Christensen

Inger Christensen (1935-2009) was one of the greatest Danish poets of the 20th century. A few years before her death, she submitted a large archive to the Royal Danish Library. This afternoon, senior researcher Thomas Hvid Kromann from the Manuscript Collection will present Inger Christensen's writing and display select manuscripts from her archive.

Much loved and widely respected

Inger Christensen is known for major works such as the poetry collections It (1969), Alphabet (1981) and Butterfly Valley: A Requiem (1991). Inger Christensen was both a strict system poet and at the same time much loved and respected in wider circles, and during her lifetime she was often mentioned as a possible candidate to receive the Nobel Prize.

A few years before her death, Inger Christensen handed over a large archive to the Royal Danish Library, which was the background for her son Peter Borum and her Swedish translator Marie Silkeberg's anthology verden ønsker at se sig selv (2018), which consists of previously unpublished texts from the archive. The just under 1,000 pages became one of the absolute biggest literary sensations of the year and shed new light on the authorship.
