The Royal Life Guards Band: Tribute to Carl Nielsen

Carl Nielsen turns 160! Come and hear The Royal Life Guards Band celebrate one of Denmark's greatest composers with Mathias Hammer as compére.

With the eminent singers in Holmens Kantori, the band strikes up a birthday celebration - with the band's own flutist Simon Rosenkilde Roed as soloist in the first movement of the flute concerto. The concert is conducted by Christian Kluxen, who with his keen eye for detail and obvious musicality will lead the audience through symphonic and folk works and unfold Carl Nielsen's wonderful melodies and complex harmonies and rhythms.

Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) from Fyn became one of the most beloved composers we have had in Denmark during his lifetime, and he continues to be so. He played the violin, but it was composition that really occupied him. His compositional art is alive and well, not least because of the lovable folk-like nature of his works.

The concert's compére, Mathias Hammer, is a trained pianist, but he is perhaps best known as both an enthusiastic and factual music communicator with a truly impressive knowledge of music and his well-crafted humour. You may also know him as one of the sharp team captains in 'The Classical Music Quiz' on DR2.

Holmens Kantori is considered one of Denmark's best choirs. They are based in Holmens Church and Christiansborg Palace, but they give many concerts around Denmark. At this concert, the choir's talented singers will give voice to Carl Nielsen's music in the Black Diamond.
