Take the whole family on an adventure in The Black Diamond, where stories come to life and creativity is unleashed.
During the autumn holidays, Royal Danish Library invites you to a magical experience for the whole family. Go explore the library using the new storytelling tour The Magic of the Night, meet mysterious and fun characters and take part in creative activities and games inspired by the story.
Practical information
Admission is free for children and their adults. The activities are primarily aimed at children aged 5-10, but all children are welcome.
The autumn holiday activities take place around the house and in the Panorama Hall on the 4th floor and are open from 10 am to 4 pm. Follow the signs through the building or ask the staff for directions.
Food can be purchased at The Black Diamond's café. There is limited space to enjoy brought-in food in selected areas of the library.
The Magic of the Night – on an adventure in The Black Diamond
When night falls in The Black Diamond, the library's stories awaken, and you can help uncover them.
The Magic of the Night is about the girl Evi, who has come with her father to work at the library. She has promised to stay in the office and sleep, but her curiosity is too great. Together with the friendly night guard Madsen, she embarks on a magical journey of discovery through the library.
With a magic bag in hand and the book The Magic of the Night, you follow Evi's adventures around the impressive architecture of The Black Diamond. Along the way, you will meet crazy and friendly ghosts, stories that come to life and people from the library's historical collections.
The Magic of the Night is a magical and atmospheric storytelling journey for the whole family – especially for children aged 5–10.
Play, creativity and magic
After the storytelling tour, you can explore the universe of the story even further. Try fun and creative activities inspired by The Magic of the Night and the historical figures you meet along the way.
Create your own sculptures and paper cutouts
Unleash your creativity in the creative workshop. Here, you can shape small sculptures from hairpins and plasticine or make your own paper cutouts. The activities are inspired by sculptor Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen and author Hans Christian Andersen, both of whom appear in the book The Magic of the Night. Maybe there's a little artist hiding inside you?
Catch a nose
Can you catch a nose? Grab a fishing net and see how many noses you can catch. It's both fun and crazy – the activity is inspired by the story of astronomer Tycho Brahe in The Magic of the Night.
Dress up and take a portrait
Find your inner clown or camel and bring it to life with the costumes. Once you're dressed up, you can have your own portrait taken in the photo studio. The activity is inspired by the iconic author Karen Blixen, whom you also meet in The Magic of the Night.
Step into history
Explore the cozy history tents and get up close to the library's collections. Here you can immerse yourself in exciting material and learn more about the historical figures and ghosts you meet in The Magic of the Night.
