Bön

Bön is the oldest spiritual tradition in Tibet. There exists two distinct Bön traditions. The so called Early n has many features in common with the pre-Buddhist folk religion and the late Bön, known as the Nine-fold Path, has many features in common with Buddhism.

In addition to a set of the Canonical texts of late Bön in 179 volumes, the Oriental Collection of The National Library has several other books about Bön in Tibetan.

The canonical Bön po texts are divided into sutra (Tib.: Mdo), wisdom teachings (Tib.: 'bum), tantra (Tib.:Rgyud) and treasuries (Tib.: Mdzod). These are grouped into three main sections. The first section consists of literature about the first four paths, the so called Causal Paths. The Second section consists of literature about the next four paths, the co called Resultant Paths. The Final section consists of literature about The Great Perfection, making a total of Nine.
