The Oriental and Judaica Collections of the National Library has cooperated with the National Library of Bhutan since 1996, in The Twinning Library Project financed by DANIDA under the ENRECA programme. This cooperation strengthens the National Library of Bhutan and trains its employees in the preservation of the cultural heritage of literature that the country possesses, and in making this literature accessible to facilitate research in the country's history, religion and culture, both for researchers inside and outside of Bhutan,Bhutan possesses a uniquely rich cultural heritage of written sources, which never before has been registered, documented or studied. These sources are located in archives, remote monasteries, district head quarters and in private collections. The project aims at supporting Bhutanese researchers in independently and competently collecting, micro filming, digitalizing, cataloguing and conserving these vast collections. A main effort has been directed towards the development and installation of a database with a completely new classification system for the recording of these sources.
