Information about the materials in the Map Collection

Danish cartographic materials are acquired according to the act of legal deposit, and are registered in the librarys online catalogue: See above: Catalogue

Non-Danish cartographic materials are bought or acquired as exchanges or gifts. The collection is searchable in the librarys online catalogue: See above: Catalogue

Modern map series are acquired mainly on CD-ROM. Older map series, mainly received from the former Geodætisk Institut, have been classified and the registration in the librarys online catalogue is in progress. The record is linked to the index map.

The majority of the material is catalogued and classified according to region, topic and chronology.
Users have access to the card catalogues.

Records of cartographic material published in Denmark from 1960 onwards are accessible from the librarys online catalogue as is also the case with modern foreign atlases.

The card catalogues containing material from before 1960 are being digitalized. When this process is completed, the best place to search for the material will be in the librarys online catalogue. See above: Catalogue

Some maps and atlases are registered in bibliographies with special subjects.

Danish material aquired according to the act of legal deposit is a part of the national heritage.
The material cannot be borrowed, but can be used in the reading room: Center of Maps, Prints and Photographs, only by appointment. It is possible to purchase photographs of our material from the Library's Photographic Studio.
The material placed in the reading room: Center of Maps, Prints and Photographs can be photocopied, if the condition of the material is suitable.

The non-Danish material cannot be borrowed, but the non-Danish map series may be lent for use to other Danish libraries' reading rooms (max 10 sheets). The index map is used in the lending procedure.
Modern atlases can be lent for 1 month by other libraries' or to private users (with a Danish address) if the condition of the material is suitable.
