Not everyone finds reading fun or easy. Today, it is estimated that around 8 percent of the Danish population – equivalent to approximately 500,000 Danes – have dyslexia, according to The Danish Dyslexia Association. Having difficulty reading can affect both schooling and future prospects. When people with dyslexia or other reading difficulties work with strategies and find the courage to read, reading counsellors can play a crucial role in helping them.
This effort deserves attention and recognition. That is why Royal Danish Library awards the Reading Counsellor Award every year, to recognise one reading counsellor who has made an extraordinary effort. For example, breaking down taboos and spreading the word about dyslexia and other reading difficulties. Or contributing to positive self-understanding, developing new tools or new methods for teaching and counselling – and of course strengthening the motivation and joy of reading.
We live in a time where we are constantly bombarded with information and digital possibilites; and where it can be difficult to find peace and quiet. That is why it is particularly important that children and young people are given the opportunity to discover the joy of books and reading. For people with dyslexia or other reading difficulties, the path to a good reading experience can be longer, and reading councellors play a very special role in this. This is why I hope, that many will recommend a reading councellor who has made a difference – they deserve to be recognised.
Anyone can nominate a reading councellor and thus help decide, who will receive the award. In addition to the honour, the reading councellor of the year will receive DKK 12,500.
