Royal Danish Library, on behalf of the national licensing consortium – which includes Danish universities and other higher education and research institutions – has entered into a new four-year national licensing agreement with the scientific publisher Wiley for the period 2026–2029.

The agreement is one of the largest national licensing agreements and covers approximately 1,400 scientific journals. It ensures continued access for students and researchers to Wiley's journals and at the same time provides the opportunity to publish Danish research articles with immediate Open Access. This means that research results become freely available to everyone as soon as they are published.

Open Access is a central element in the efforts into creating more open science and broader access to research-based knowledge.

The new agreement includes a number of specific improvements:

  • The number of Open Access articles where the publication fee (APC) is covered by the agreement has increased. This entails that the agreement covers the costs of having an article published as Open Access.
  • The agreement has been concluded at roughly the same price level as the previous four-year agreement, thus keeping the costs stable.
  • The agreement also sets requirements for suppliers' climate footprints – a result of long-term work at Royal Danish Library in collaboration with external partners. Thus sustainability is integrated even more systematically into the national licensing agreements.

Overall, the agreement provides both better conditions for Open Access publishing and a more cost-effective solution for Denmark. The agreement thus makes it easier and more attractive to choose Open Access publishing and helps ensure free access to research.

What is Open Access?

Open Access (OA) means that research articles are freely available online to everyone without subscription or payment. It increases the visibility of Danish research and strengthens knowledge sharing nationally and internationally.
