When Mikael Bertelsen's programme about Jørgen Leth in the series "Det sidste ord" (The last word) rolls across Danish TV screens on Sunday, 5 October, the recording will already be safely stored in the collections of Royal Danish Library.

The recording is included – along with the other interviews from the programme series – in the library's collections. The library even has the entire recording and not just the clip that is shown on TV. In our collections, the interview is preserved for posterity as a cultural historical testimony.

Jørgen Leth spoke to his contemporaries like few others. But it has also long been clear that his voice and his artistic work would live on in posterity. It is therefore quite natural that Royal Danish Library makes room in its collections for recordings with Jørgen Leth.

- Søren Bitsch, Deputy Director of Cultural Heritage at Royal Danish Library.

The programme is based on an interview that Jørgen Leth gave to Bertelsen on the condition that it would only be published after his death.

The raw tapes of all interviews in the programme series "Det sidste ord" (The last word) are preserved for posterity at Royal Danish Library. Only a very few employees have access to them until 20 years after the death of the person in question.

Many traces of Jørgen Leth

Jørgen Leth was a poet, journalist, filmmaker, cycling commentator – and not least a voice that entered the consciousness of the Danes. He practically made himself a work of art and left many traces in the collections of Royal Danish Library.

If you search for “Jørgen Leth” in the library’s system, you get over 800 results: poetry collections, portrait photographs, books, interviews – yes, even an interview in Eurowoman. In DR-arkivet, you can see and hear him again in iconic TV and radio productions, such as the radio programme Jazz & co. or readings in Dagens digter (Today's poet).

So the recordings from "Det sidste ord" (The last word) are part of a whole series of materials that together paint a picture of Jørgen Leth and his contemporaries.

Experience Mikael Bertelsen in The Black Diamond

At this year's Culture Night, you can experience Mikael Bertelsen talking about the thoughts behind "Det sidste ord" (The last word) and in this way get up close to the programme, which has been created in collaboration with Royal Danish Library.
