Agnete and the Merman

Dramatic Poem in Two Acts by Hans Christian Andersen

Opus 3
NWGW 151

Author: Hans Christian Andersen

Composition: 1842 to April 1843.

The myth about Agnete and the Merman fascinated Gade in his early youth. While he was travelling in Sweden in September 1838, he started working on an overture, which he abandoned. A year later he laid the framework for an even more ambitious work on the same theme: a symphony in five parts with choir. The work never materialized. But then he met Hans Christian Andersen who as early as 1833 had written an ill-fated poem on the theme, and together they set out to write a play with incidental music. The first performance was a failure and after the second performance it was taken off the bill.
