The exact date of composition is unknown, but Nielsen was most likely working on the song in the years before the publication of Op. 4 when he, according to various sources, was engaged with setting music to texts by J.P. Jacobsen. In 1891, Nielsen and his wife named their first child Irmelin after the princess in Jacobsen's poem Irmelin Rose.
