In early 1917, The Royal Theatre laid plans for a new production of Oehlenschläger's 'dramatic fairy tale', Aladdin. Nielsen was eventually persuaded to compose the music, and after some preliminary drafts in 1917 he composed the music mainly over a seven-month period from July 1918 to January 1919.
