Composition: Between 1889 and 1890.

The work was probably composed around New Year 1889–90, but the further circumstances of its genesis remain obscure. In September 1889, he had been appointed as violinist in The Royal Danish Orchestra (Det Kongelige Kapel) and awarded the bursary, Det Anckerske Legat.
