GKS 2021 4°: Lucanus, Pharsalia

Parchment, 108 ff. [A + 1-90 + 91 + 92-107], c. 24 × 14 cm; Italy, 1100-1150

F. A is the remnants of what was originally the first leave of the manuscript; together with f. 6 it has been the outer bifolium of a quaternion. A has been torn out and substituted by the present f. 1, a single, inserted leave. Ff. 7 & 8 was originally the inner bifolium of the same quaternion, but it has later been misplaced. The correct sequence of the leaves is: ff. 1-3 (= I.1-221), ff. 7-8 (= I.222-369) & ff. 4-6 (= I.370-596)

Ff. 64r-67v, 71r-v & 107r have been copied in two columns by another hand than the major part of the manuscript. F. 100, copied in a different hand, and f. 107 is the outer bifolium of the last quaternion of the manuscript. F. 71 is a single leave pasted to the bifolium 70-72. F. 91 is an insert with the text of IX.515-518, that has been left out on f. 90v (due to haplography of (H)ammon in IX.514 & IX.518)

There are interlinear and marginal glosses and commentaries to the text. Sketches illustrating the text are found on f. 18v (Brundisium), 57v (Thesalia) & 89r (T-map)

The manuscript was acquired by the Royal Library at the auction of the Chapter Library of Hamburg in 1784. It was paginated and signed by Johann Martin Winckler, appointed secretary to the chapter in 1727. The manuscript was rebound during the reign of King Christian VIII (1839-1848)
