Kantate til Lorenz Frølich-Festen was composed for the occasion of the eightieth birthday of the painter Lorenz Frølich which was celebrated in Koncertpalæet, Copenhagen, on 30 November 1900. Nielsen composed the music at a time when he was busy working on his opera Saul og David (CNW 1).
