According to a letter, Nielsen embarked on Thema med variationer barely two months after finishing the Chaconne (CNW 86). Though the work interested him enormously, he had to put it aside for a while in order to complete Kantate ved Grosserer-Societetets Hundredaarsfest (CNW 111).
