Composition: 1889–94.
Nielsen presumably began working on his first symphony as early as 1889. According to Emilie Demant Hatt's list of Nielsen's early compositions, the first movement was completed on 27 September 1889. It was only when he had returned from a travel abroad in the summer 1891 that he concentrated on the project again. According to letters to his wife, Nielsen was working on the symphony during the following years. The fair copy was end-dated in January 1894.
