Composition: 9 Aug. 1850.

In 1850 Carsten Hauch asked Gade to write music for his play "Flugten til Sæteren". Gade wrote the overture and five movements (NWGW A 20); however, Hauch's manuscript was rejected by The Royal Theatre and returned on 5 October 1851. When the overture was published thirty seven years later, Gade had added three trombones.
