By the time Nielsen composed his first sonata for violin and piano, he had already established himself in the Copenhagen concert life – for instance with the performance of his first symphony (CNW 25) in 1894. The date of composition can be determined fairly accurately on the basis of the fair copy's end-datings: 5 April (first movement), 22 June (second movement) and 23 August (third movement) 1895.
