Friar Rus is the Devil himself, who having assumed human form, is admitted into a monastery as a cook. The monks are now in his power, until at last he is unmasked by a peasant, whose cow he has stolen. (LN 937 / 53,-15 8vo).
”So Rus did to all the monks
he was ready whenever anybody called
To drink, to pour, to fetch women
- they never had had such an interpreter
Employing these and many other tricks
that was Rus’s desire
He did not cease to act
until he had them all captured in his trap.” (fol. A3v)
