NKS 1 2°: Biblia Latina (fragmentum)

Parchment, 40 ff., ca. 33 × 25 cm; France ca. 800-820

The fragment belongs to the group of Bibles produced under the supervision of Theodulf of Orléans in the years around 800. Palaeographical as well textual elements link Theodulf’s Bibles together. Altogether 6 copies have been preserved; two of them are complete, whereas the rest are fragmentary

NKS 1 2° contain a continuous part of the Old Testament: The Book of Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, and the beginning of Daniel. The Book of Psalms is annotated in a contemporary hand that witnesses of the philological ambitions of Theodulf and his team. Notes to other texts have been added later in the Middle Ages

NKS 1 2° has been a part of a manuscript that belonged to the Cathedral of Carcassonne. This manuscript was still intact up to ca. 1690 when it was announced that the main part of it had disappeared. It was bequeathed to the Royal Library in 1824 together with other manuscripts collected by D. G. Moldenhawer
