The piece was presumably inspired by Hartmann's visit in the summer of 1848 to the manor Tiselholt on Funen which had belonged to his deceased farther-in-law. Here he had met a group of Swedish officers who were housed at Tiselholt. Later the owner of the estate, Carl Ulrich Jørgensen, sent a copy of "Svensk Hjemvee" to one of these officers, as his adjutant was the Swedish pianist and composer Ludvig Leonard Löwegren (1817-1894).
