Composition: 1855.
Hartmann had met Clara Schumann (then Wieck) in Leipzig in 1836 and again in Berlin three years later, before she was married to Robert Schumann. In 1842 she gave concerts in Copenhagen and dined with Hartmann and his wife Emma, and they maintained a close relationship. Clara Schumann visited Copenhagen again in 1856, and as late as in 1895 she congratulated Hartmann on his 90th birthday.
