J.P.E. Hartmann
Sechs Tonstücke in Liederform
Seks Tonestykker i Sangform
Six Pieces in Song Form
Opus 37
HartW 76
JPEW III/1 no. 11
DF 26
Composition: 22 Oct. 1842.
It was at the instigation of the German music publisher Julius Schuberth in Hamburg that Hartmann composed this collection. In January 1843 Schuberth received the requested volume, and he was so delighted that he immediately asked for a second volume. This was never to be. Hartmann chose to call his piano pieces "Tonstücke in Liederform" instead of "Lieder ohne Worte" as Schuberth had proposed, probably because he did not want them to be associated with Mendelssohn's famous collections, although they are in the same style. Hartmann might have been inspired to write these pieces when, during his visit to Leipzig in 1839, he was invited to one of Mendelssohn's private Sunday morning matinées, at which he was asked to play the piano.
