Composition: 1840-1841.

Hartmann had originally envisioned that the collection should consist of six pieces, namely the five pieces composed 1840 and a "No. 5", which was omitted but later published separately as "Canzonetta" (HartW 71). In 1840 he offered them to Fr. Hofmeister who, however, found them dull and returned the manuscript to Hartmann. Instead they were published 1842-1843 by Julius Schuberth in Hamburg, who after having published Hartmann's "Prize Sonata" asked for more piano works.
