Opus 18
HartW 66
JPEW III/1 no. 7
DF 19
Dedicatees: Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (vol. 1); Heinrich Marschner (vol. 2)
Composition: 1835.
The year 1835 has been added to Hartmann's manuscript in pencil at a later date, which, however, is a likely date as Hartmann brought the score with him on his tour through Europe in the spring and summer of 1836. During his stay in Leipzig, he visited the famous music publishers Breitkopf & Härtel, Fr. Kistner, Peters and Friedrich Hofmeister. The latter promised to publish some of Hartmann's works, starting with the Caprices which were published already in November the same year.

Sketch
2 pages; 35 x 26 cm.
Score, autograph, fair copy
32 pages; 24 x 35.5 cm.
Contents of the autograph and the order of the caprices correspond with the first edition of 1837, apart from the fact that vol. 1 No. 4 (No. 11:6 in the Wilhelm Hansen editions) is missing in the manuscript, and the manuscript does not include the print's numbering of the first caprices. The articulation in the autograph corresponds with that of the Hofmeister edition, whereas it differs in many respects from that of the two Wilhelm Hansen editions. In the latter editions, published decades later than the first edition, many details in articulation are added.
