Composition: 31 Mar. 1851.

Apparently the work was never printed; the opus number "53" of the end-dating was used for a different work ("Etudes Instructives") from about the same time, where it fits into the chronological order of the works with opus numbers. Motifs from the last movement were later used in "Klaverstykker fra ældre og nyere Tid" No. 5 in E flat major (HartW 120:5).

Containing draft for the first movement, the musical texture being somewhat simpler than in the fair copy. The movement was apparently not quite finished, when Hartmann began writing down the complete sonata.

3 bifolios stitched together. Written in brown ink with numerous corrections in pencil. Paper: 14 staves. Title page and eleven numbered pages. Title above the second movement added in pencil: "Sang uden Ord" (Song without Words). Title above third movement added in pencil: "Gamle Minder" (Old Memories). At the end of the music on p. 11 signed and dated: "I:P:E: Hartmann d. 31 Marts 1851. / Op: 53". Opus number cancelled in pencil. Various fragments added after the final stave on p. 11.
