In 1827 the Italian opera singer Giuseppe Siboni, who was the director of the singing school at The Royal Theatre, founded an academy of music aiming at educating singers for The Royal Theatre. Hartmann taught theory of harmony, piano and singing. He furthermore composed works for the pupils' concerts.
