Opus 67

DF 209

Choreographer: August Bournonville

Composition: 1867-1868.

August Bournonville got his inspiration for "Thrymskviden" mainly from F.L. Liebenberg's edition of Adam Oehlenschläger's "Nordens Guder". He started working on the ballet in January 1867 and contacted Hartmann in late February. From then on they worked closely together as had been the case with "Valkyrien" (HartW 7), even though the ballet was not officially accepted by the director of The Royal Theatre until 8 February. The costs of sets and costumes were so high that the director recommended that they were divided over two seasons. This was against Bournonville's wish that the first performance should take place in December 1867; unfortunately Hartmann was unable to finish his very complicated score till that time and he did not end-date it until 15 February 1868 - a week before the premiere. After 7 October 1868 the ballet was performed without the recited prologue "Nornerne" (The Norns).

Roles: Urda (Recitation); Varanda (Recitation)
