J.P.E. Hartmann

Sulamiths og Salomons Sange

Sulamith and Solomon

Opus 52
HartW 355
DF 125

Author: B.S. Ingemann

Composition: 28 Oct. 1847 to 23 Apr. 1850.

In 1839 B.S. Ingemann published thirty-four poems with motifs from "Songs of Songs" as a prelude to the dramatic tale "Salomons Ring", which was incorporated in his "Samlede Skrifter" (Collected Works) in 1843. In the autumn of 1847 Ingemann sent this collection to Hartmann after they had met at Sorø Akademi, where Ingemann was a lecturer. Hartmann immediately composed music to three of the poems, two of which were published separately. The remaining songs were published in December 1850, apart from No. 6 which was not included until the edition published c. 1885. Hartmann has closely reflected on the cyclic structure as he neither followed Ingemann's order of the poems nor his own chronological order.
