In 1836 the new building of the University of Copenhagen was inaugurated, the old one having been destroyed during the English bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807. Unfortunately there was neither time nor money to decorate the Ceremonial Hall at that time; it had to wait until 1862-1865 when the decoration work was executed by Christian Hilker. It was later supplemented by historical paintings by Wilhelm Marstrand, Carl Bloch, Erik Henningsen and Wilhelm Rosenstand.
