The song was originally composed for male choir and orchestra as a movement to Kantate ved Polyteknisk Læreanstalts 100 Aars Jubilæum (CNW 112). The piano arrangement only survives in a letter from Nielsen to his daughter Irmelin dated 6 August 1929.
