Carl Nielsen Edition

Composition: 1911–12.

Having finished his third symphony (CNW 27) and music for the play Hagbarth og Signe (CNW 12), Nielsen started on a concerto for violin and orchestra. Parts of the work were composed in Norway during summer 1911. Back home in Copenhagen, the work started to give him trouble which he found challenging but at the same time also inspiring. From mid-November, the work progressed more easily, and on 13 December 1911 he finished the draft.
