Composition: Between 1888 and 1891.

Nielsen worked for a time on the idea of setting the tale of the pious widow Judith from Apocrypha to music. Motifs are found in a little leather-bound sketchbook, which he used during 1888–91. The only complete sketch for the work is Hyrdedrengens Melodi for oboe.
