We are slowly opening the library

Loans and returns at Det Kgl. Bibliotek are open. However, things are not back to normal (yet). We are re-opening in stages and it's a bit complicated, but we will try to explain it.

The Royal Library on Victor Albecks Vej made ready to receive guests according to the guidelines of the National Board of Health.

Not updated. See instead We have (almost) reopened the library

We will re-open selected reading rooms from 2 June 2020 onwards (see list below). And from Monday 8 June we can finally open Stranger Than Kindness: The Nick Cave Experience, which is our big exhibition in The Black Diamond, Copenhagen.

We follow the recommendations of the health authorities closely for both employees and users, and as a consequence we must also differentiate in the opening of our addresses and services, e.g. we will open reading rooms in Jutland a little faster and some services will not open yet in Zealand. We hope for your understanding.

2 June:

  • The Reading Rooms Old Reading Room, Silence 1 and 2 on Victor Albecks Vej, Aarhus (note that the canteen and other public areas do not open, so we cannot yet offer areas for group work)
  • Danish National Art Library's reading room in Søborg (please note that material must be reserved and booked)

8 June:

  • Exhibitions in The Black Diamond, Copenhagen
  • The Research Reading Room in The Black Diamond, Copenhagen (remember that the reading room is only for users who have reserved material for it)
  • The Café in the Black Diamond (note that the canteen does not open)

Please notice that you can make reservations for material to be used in the Research Reading Room starting 8 June 2020, i.e. on the same day we re-open the reading room.

Loans, returns, reservations

You can collect and return books and journals at the following locations:

  • Victor Albecks Vej, Aarhus
  • The Black Diamond, Søren Kirkegaards Plads, København
  • Copenhagen University Library (KUB Nord), Nørre Alle, København
  • Copenhagen University Library (KUB South Campus), Karen Blixens Plads, København
  • The Danish National Art Library, Nyhavn, København
  • Roskilde University Library, Roskilde

Remember to check our opening hours.

All materials must be reserved online before you collect them. You do this by searching for and reserving the materials you’re interested in here on our website, just as you did before the close down. However, you must choose one of the six locations listed above as your pick-up point. We will notify you by email when your materials are ready for you.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to order our materials through bibliotek.dk or have the materials delivered to one's local public library yet.

Royal Danish Library is closely monitoring and adhering the recommendations of the health authorities under Covid-19, and we have taken a number of measures to prevent the spread of infection and ensure that the re-opening is done in a healthy and secure way.

This means, among other things, that you may experience longer processing times for reservations than usual. Processing time on loans may be close to a week under the current conditions. Unfortunately, we are also unable to offer delivery of materials directly to university staff offices in the coming period, and for the time being it is not possible to view materials in the reading room, either.

Cancel reservations for materials you no longer need

If you had materials ready for collection during the close down period (13 March – 17 May 2020), the materials are still reserved for you.

We encourage all our users to delete reservations that are no longer relevant. It will make it easier for us to re-open the library, if we only have to find materials that our users currently need.

How does the close down effect fines and reservations?

Any loans from before the close down period, 13 March 2020, have been automatically extended to 8 June 2020, and you will not receive any recall notices/fines for the close down period.

Ordinary loan materials are automatically renewed until 15 August 2020, unless the material is reserved / recalled or there are borrower blockages. You will not receive any home recall notices/fines for the shutdown period.

If you had placed reservations for materials before 13 March 2020, they are still in our systems and you will be notified by email when you can collect the materials.
