24 March, 2022.

Royal Danish Library uses 24 March, 2022 to mark our condemnation of the war. We do this partly by flying the Ukrainian flag at our main buildings in Copenhagen and Aarhus, and partly by launching some initiatives to which the institution can naturally contribute, as we have done since the outbreak of the war.

Royal Danish Library is in the process of collecting web pages and content about the war in Ukraine. We do this by harvesting the pages' data and storing it on our servers so that we can support future and important research and history writing. The collection is aimed at Danish sites dealing with the war, and foreign sites dealing with Danish-Ukrainian conditions. We have also helped Ukrainian cultural heritage institutions with knowledge and tools in relation to web archiving.

If you are interested in helping to preserve digital Ukrainian cultural heritage, then we recommend that you visit Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online.

Royal Danish Library initiates the purchase of fiction for both children and adults in Ukrainian. We do this to support library services for the refugees who are on their way to the municipalities. We lend the books to the public libraries as part of our existing subscription scheme for foreign language media.

Finally, we support the joint Nordic "Statement of solidarity with Ukraine"; In this context, it is important for us to emphasise that Russia has committed itself to protecting Ukraine's cultural heritage by ratifying the 1954 UNESCO Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.

The war in Ukraine has now lasted a month. Royal Danish Library wants to express solidarity with citizens and colleagues of war-torn Ukraine.
