The text is part of B.S. Ingemann's "Holger Danske" from 1837, which consists of 67 poems. Hartmann also set music to three others: "Holger Danskes Vugge" (HartW 351), "Skriveren og Kejserens Datter" (HartW 359) and "Holgers Sang om Livet" (HartW 457). The cycle of poems tells the story of the legendary Danish national hero Holger Danske (Ogier the Dane) who appears for the first time in "The Song of Roland" from the mid-twelfth century as one of the knights of Charles the Great.
