Festmarsch og Sange til Mindefesten ved Skanderborg over høisalig Kong Frederik den Sjette

Festive March and Songs for the Memorial Feast at Skanderborg for the Blessed King Frederik VI

Opus 42
HartW 35
DF 76

Authors: Hans Christian Andersen; B.S. Ingemann

Composition: July 1845.

In 1840 it was decided to raise a monument in memory of the newly deceased King Frederik VI at Skanderborg Slotsbanke (Skanderborg Castle Hill); however, the memorial with a bust made by Bertel Thorvaldsen was not finished until 1845. For the festivities on 31 July, B.S. Ingemann and Hans Christian Andersen were asked to write the texts, whereas Hartmann was requested to compose the music and was responsible for the practical matters. Unfortunately, the wind direction and a number of other circumstances made it almost impossible to hear the music, so that Hartmann had to write a rapport to the king who had attended the inauguration. Later the Festive March became extremely popular titled "Skanderborgmarsch" and was issued in a vast number of arrangements.
