The melody was composed as part of Nielsen's contribution to Nye Melodier til Johan Borups Dansk Sangbog (CNW Coll. 21). The idea of setting music to the text apparently came from Adolf Riis-Magnussen, the editor of the songbook (see letter to Nielsen, 17 May 1926). The melody is only known from this edition.
