NKS 1878 2°: Gregorius Turonensis, Historiae sive Historia Francorum

1 fol., 29,6 > 29,4 × 20,7 > 19,7 cm; France (Tours?), saec. VII

NKS 1878 2° is a single leaf from the same codex as a bifolium preserved in Leiden (Universiteits-Bibliotheek, Bibl. Publ. Lat. 21, ff. 1-2) and parts of two bifolia now in the Vatican (BAV, Reg. Lat. 689 bis, ff. 322-325)

The Copenhagen fragment contains the beginning of book V of Gregory of Tours’ History of the Francs, Historiae or Historia Francorum, the text from "filium eius paruulum …" (V.1) to "… morte praeuentus interiit" (V.3). The outer edge of the folium has been cut away. The contents of the four columns are:

Recto a: "/// filium eius paruulum ... at ille relictam ordinationem" (V.1-2)
Recto b: "patris toronus /// ... iurauit eis dice///" (V.2)
Verso a: "///id uoluntas dei ... /// sibi aduersam" (V.2-3)
Verso b: "multos ex ea ... morte praeuentus interiit" (V.3)

The fragment was copied during the first half of the 7th century, probably in Tours. It is the oldest extant source for the passage of Gregory’s text that is contained on the fragment, and the oldest manuscript in the collections of the Royal Library
