Fragm. 527-528: Beda Venerabilis, Vita S. Cuthberti

Parchment, 2 parts of 1 leaf, c. 27 × 30 cm; saec. XII / XIII

The 2 parts have been pasted together to form what appears to be one fragment. Fragm. 527 contains headings and 18 lines of text in 2 columns on each side. Fragm. 528 contains 15 complete lines and remnants of one more line

The following passages have been preserved (cf. Bedæ Opera historica minora, ed. Jos. Stevenson, London 1841; & Two Lives of Saint Cuthbert. A life by an anonymous monk of Lindisfarne and Bede’s Prose Life. Texts, translation, and notes by Bertram Colgrave, Cambridge 1940):

Fragm. Colgrave p. 288 + 290

Fragm. 527-528 verso: “ueret. cuius ante mortem ... partem pro ostendendo incorrup” + “manebat. In hoc etenim ... pignora prestat opis” = Caput XLII, ed. Stevenson, p. 129, 6-30 + 130, 4-30; & ed. Colgrave p. 290-292 + 292-294

Fragm. 527-528 have been used as cover of papers from the customs of Malmø (then DK, now SE) concerning the year 1628. The notes added on Fragm. 527 indicate that Fragm. 528 was found or identified later than Fragm. 527, since the references do not take the text contained on Fragm. 528 into account. Only Fragm. 527 was known to Ellen Jørgensen when she wrote her dissertation published in 1908

Fragm. 527-528 may have belonged to the same codex as Fragm. 529, which contains parts of Vitae Columbani abbatis discipulorumque eius
